About Bas Kosters

Dutch fashion designer Bas Kosters is famous for his individuality and unique aesthetics in fashion, music and performance. Bas combines his work in the field of fashion with collaborations with premium brands, as well as other activities concerning design, arts and music.

Born in 1977, Zutphen, The Netherlands, Bas Kosters was drawn to the world of art and fashion at a very young age. After graduating from Fashion and Clothing at the Rijn Ijssel College Arnhem in 1997, he attended Fashion Design at AKI Academy of Fine Arts in Enschede where he completed his degree with the collection ‘Containerkoninginnen’ (Dumpster Queens) in 2001. Bas Kosters continued to pursue his fashion education at Fashion Institute Arnhem in which he took a master course and graduated in 2003 with the collection ‘Two Teacups and a Frying Pan’. Inspired by the image building in the music industry, the concept served as a fictional image for a band. Bas Kosters made the collection presentation look like an over the top pop concert, combining fashion, music and performance. With this collection, he won the professional jury prize at the Robijn Fashion Award and has been the center of the public’s eye ever since.

The Dutch fashion icon highly appreciates history and continuity. A sense of nostalgia is often present in his work. He Uses his own childhood memories and images to inspire his work.

For him, the most important thing is that visualizations and the body of though keep coming back throughout the re-evolvement. This is the reason why he emphasizes on building a story and continuity from one project to another. Like an artist, his work evolves throughout the creative process, rather than creating isolated pieces, he is creating a universe of his own ideas.

Bas Kosters has a strong personal signature that is evident in every part of his work. Not only he is famous for his illustrations and dolls with big, adorable clear eyes, but also the raw finishing, the use of vibrant colors and glitters, and of course his dying technique. Often his work is provocative, with strong statements commenting on fashion and society.
